Although Millennium is also working on Vancouver’s $1-billion Olympic village project, Evelyn Drive construction has no ties to the False Creek project’s success.
The current economic climate shouldn’t impact on the 20.9-acre Evelyn Drive development, noting that West Vancouver sees limited growth because of the lack of available property.
Evelyn Drive would not only allow seniors looking to downsize to stay within the district, but also would give families seeking an opening in the West Vancuver housing market an opportunity to buy in.
West Van Mayor Pamela Goldsmith-Jones said it is important that the parcel of land off Taylor Way be presentable for the Olympics.
“I think we’ll see some activity just on that corner in terms of making it look much better than it looks right now,” she said. “Millennium and West Vancouver are both partners in 2010, so that entrance is a very important statement.”
In April 2008, the district approved four development permits for the first phase of Evelyn Drive.
The mixed housing units, including apartment, townhouse and cluster-style housing, are slated to be built beside Keith Road and Evelyn Drive. Next, Millennium will have to secure building permits, explained Geri Boyle, West Van’s manager of community planning. “They are now getting in gear to advance the project,” she said.
